is that of positive confessionalism. In other words, the theory claims that you have the creative force to speak something into existence.
The theory is complicated, which should be a clue it is not of God. The roots of it go back to Smith Wigglesworth, Finis J. Dake, Mormonism and Mary Baker Eddy/Christian Science.
Why do I include the last two?
Because essentially, the movement claims at its basis the following unScriptural doctrines – the source of those teachings is in parentheses:
- Faith is a substance, like Gravity (E. W. Kenyon)
- God spoke Faith, causing the Universe to spring into being. By His positive confession of faith, the Universe created itself. (E. W. Kenyon / Dake)
- God reproduced Himself on earth, creating a race of Little Gods. (Mormonism)
- When we sinned in the garden, we gave the legal right to the world over to Satan, and God had to – pause – retreat from this world. I added the pause, because there was no way I was going to write out such an uninterrupted blasphemy. (Kenneth Hagin / Mormonism)
- Because God supposedly is not in our Universe, He supposedly can do nothing unless we give Him permission to do it. (Hagin/Kenyon)
- we lost our legal rights ot be gods in this world, because Satan owns it. Our nature was exchanged for Satan’s nature. (Mormonism)
- Jesus, the perfect man, had to die and go to Hell for three days, He became sin itself on the Cross, and had to suffer in Hell for three days. (Kenyon)
- In Hell, Jesus became the first born-again Man, and through His newly restored Godhood, left Hell, paying the way for us to enter heaven. (Kenyon/Hagin)
- Since God’s will is for us to be healthy and wealthy, the Gospel is the healing is ours when we permit it. And if we speak money into existance, it will happen. (Christian Science / New Thought)
- We are the same as Jesus, the first Born Again man – except we will do mightier works. After all, are we not gods? (Mormonism / Christian Science)
- And since the Bible says “Ye will do greater things than me…”, the average Word Faith practitioner is BETTER than Jesus! (Hagin / Copeland / Price)
The answer is… no, not by a long shot! And anyone that can espouse this nonsense will not be entering Heaven. Notice they are worshipping a false god, a false Jesus, a false Gospel. I’m going to prove it.
The false god of Word Faith, notice, is not the God of the Bible.
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:1-5 (KJV)
Notice the God of the Bible creates the Universe from nothing. He is omnipotent, meaning “all powerful”.
The false god of Word Faith has to use existing forces, “Faith”. He does not have all power. He must use what someone else made – who it is is unknown. and in the Word Faith universe… the universe makes itself. It has to, in obedient response to god’s positive confession of faith. Who does their false God have faith in??? Obviously someone higher than himself. The god of the Word Faith movement is not the God of the Bible.
The God of the Bible dwells in Heaven, but is everywhere at once. He is omnipresent.
The false god of Word Faith dwelt on Earth when he made it, and had to flee when “Legal rights” were given over to Satan. He now dwells on a planet. No doubt the Bible is named Kolob, as the Mormons teach. So far, the entire creation of the world account as given by Word Faith teachers is amazingly reminiscent of those given by the Book of Mormon.
Where did these “Legal rights” come from? Where were they created? Where did, according to Word Faith teachers, Satan come from? They don’t say.
Who enforces these legal rights the Word Faith teachers talk about? They speak of a “Supreme court of the universe…” Who is that? Who is so powerful that God has to obey their legal decisions?
translation – there are other gods, each with their own planets. Right out of the Book of Mormon. I’ll be providing these quotes later on, trust me,
That’s not the God of the Bible. The God of the Bible does not retreat or flee. The God of the Bible is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. All powerful, all knowing, everywhere at once.
The Word Faith teachers will say things like “Jesus, the perfect man.” I don’t know who they’re talking about. It’s not the Lord Jesus Christ of the Bible. And as Justin Peters repeats in his A Call To Discernment videos, “If it is a different Jesus, it is a different Gospel, and a different Gospel cannot save.”
The Lord Jesus Christ in the Bible is more than a man. The Lord Jesus Christ is God in human flesh, Emmanuel. He is eternally pre-existent. The Lord Jesus Christ existed before the creation of the universe.
the “Perfect man” Jesus sounds more like the Christian Science “Jesus”. Perfect, the first “born again man.” That’s crucial to the word faith teachers, as it makes the miracles the Lord did available to all of us… for a love offering of $1,000 or higher. I actually have a video of a Word Faith teacher dismissing a $1,000 offering as “nothing – we’ve got people on Welfare vowing that – and paying it!!!”
They don’t always come out and add the last part, but if you listen closely, it’s in there. Always indirectly hinted at. More often than not, they come out and say it. “send me a thousand dollars.” We’re years away from Marjoe Gortner, who confessed in his documentary, “Just ask for ten dollars in a cookie jar. Because there’s at least 5 little old ladies in every city who’s got five dollars in a cookie jar, and they’ll send it to you. You can make $5,000 in a month doing that.” Greed has pushed the Wird Faith teachers into asking for the $1,000 right now – because apparently if you have 5 people in every city with it, and you’re in 40 cities on Cable – well, you’ll make $200,000 a month! Marjoe is probably thinking to himself he got out way too soon.
The Word Faith movement Jesus is a false Jesus, another Jesus, as the Bible says. To quote Justin Peters, “Another Jesus, another gospel.” The Bible says that anyone who preaches another gospel is to be accursed. In other words, they themselves are not born again.
What is faith?
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
Indeed, this is the verse taken out of context and misused by Word Faith teachers.
Heb 11:1 εστιν δε πιστις ελπιζομενω υποστασις πραγματων ελεγχος ου βλεπομενων
The word we’ll be dealing wtih here is not πιστις Pistis, Faith, but rather… υποστασις Hupostasis (For some reasn, the diacritic is not showing up…. sorry… it really starts with an H sound).
Hupostasis, (Hoo po Stah sis) is a compound of two Greek words Hupo and Histemi. Hupo means under, through. Histemi means to stand, to be in place, established. Indeed, Apostasy comes from a usage of Histemi meaning “to move from where you stood”, “To deviate from the correct standing”. I mention this on purpose, by the way.
So Hupostasis would then mean to be established in understanding. “Confidence” or “Assurance” would be another word for it.
I’ve listed the verses where this word is used. The bolded word is Hupostasis.
4 Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting. 2 Corinthians 9:4 (KJV)
17 That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. 2 Corinthians 11:17 (KJV)
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; Hebrews 3:14 (KJV)
The Bible is not, then, saying “substance” in the way that electrons are a “Substance”. The concept is that “Faith” then would be something you could hold in your hand, like water.
This is an incorrect view, as you could plainly see for yourself by examining Hupostasis in context in the other 4 verses it is used in. If the Word Faith teachers all had the Websters 1828, like Fundamentalists do, they would know it means:
“The essential part; the main or material part. In this epitome, we have the substance of the whole book.”
now faith is (The essential part) of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (paraphrase, to give understanding to the words used in the authorized version)
When you say your Word Faith god is speaking in faith, you are in essence (that word essence right there would have been Hupostasis in the Greek, by the way) claiming that your little G god had confidence in something other than himself. In other words, the god of the Word Faith movement had to have a God of his own! Meaning the Word Faith movement god was a created being, who exalted himself to the place of God.
And indeed they are Biblically correct here – there is indeed a created being who exalted himself to the place of God:
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Isaiah 14:13-14 (KJV)
The Bible actually gives the name of this created being in the previous verse, and even tells what the result of his “positive confession” that he is a little god will be!
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Isaiah 14:12-15 (KJV)
Let’s test this further. We have a created being who exalts himself into the place of god, and gives a positive confession that he is a little god. Does he teach others the same thing?
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3:1-5 (KJV)
So the very first cardinal doctrine of the Word Faith movement is refuted right off the bat!
I’m going to further show that the Word Faith movement is incompatible with Christianity, and indeed is the antithesis of Biblical Christianity.
Biblical Christianity says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, the wages of sin is death, God commendeth His love in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, and those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. That’s the Romans Road, a boiling down of the Gospel into a few seconds. It places the burden on Man, in that we are sinners, and the wages of sin is death. God gave us a way to salvation through the propitiairy sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. By repenting of our sins and our sinful ways and turning to the Lord, confessing His name and pleading with Him to save us, we have faith in the Lord to save us by His grace. That’s the Gospel.
Word Faith says that god created the world by the speaking of his mouth, but we, little gods all, gave away the legal right of this world to Satan. So the god of Word Faith, unable to interfere in this world without our permission sent a man named Jesus to die and go to Hell and be punished for us. while in Hell this man Jesus became born again, and resumed his original nature as a god. So we, when we are born again, are little gods again. The god of the Word Faith movement requires our mighty permission to act in this world, and when we speak this faith substance, we create just as the Word Faith god created – and when we pray, we give this powerless god the ability to act in this world.
Biblical Christianity gives God the glory, and boasts of the mightiness of God. Word Faith gives man the glory, and claims god is powerless. It is a different God, a different Jesus, a different Gospel.
The Bible warned that false teachers would arise, bringing false gospels.
29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Acts 20:29-30 (KJV)
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 5 For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. 2 Corinthians 11:3-5 (KJV)
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-9 (KJV)
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 1 John 2:18 (KJV)
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. 1 John 2:22-23 (KJV)
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 1 John 4:3 (KJV)
7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 2 John 1:7-9 (KJV)
In light of everything we’ve examined, it’s time we started making conclusions, uncomfortable ones. We’ve shown the Word Faith teachers are teaching something that has to be considered another Gospel. The Bible is clear what we must do to any that teach this false gospel.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. 2 John 1:10-11 (KJV)
The question now is… do most Word Faith teachers deny the Godhood of the Lord Jesus Christ? That is the other component that positively would identify them as the antichrists spoken of in these verses. (All quotes were found on Let Us Reason unless otherwise noted. Some additional quotes were found in the E-Book Heresy Unmasked by Basilius M. Kasera)
“why didn’t Jesus openly proclaim Himself as God during His 33 years on earth? For one single reason. He hadn’t come to earth as God, He’d come as man.” Kenneth Copeland
“Jesus existed only as an image in the heart of God, until such time as the prophets of the Old Testament could positively confess Jesus into existence through their constant prophecies.” Kenneth Copeland
“When His blood poured out it did not atone.” (Kenneth Copeland) http://www.alan-vincent.com/wordoffaithmovement.htm
“Don’t be disturbed when people accuse you of thinking you’re God -the more you get to be like me, the more they’re going to think that way of you. They crucified me for claiming that I was God. But I didn’t claim I was God, I just claimed I walked with Him and that He was in me.” Kenneth Copeland, quoting what someone named Jesus supposedly told him.
“The trinity is a doctrine of the devil.” William Branham.
“Jesus is not God.” Paula White
“the trinity is of course God the father God the son God the holy Ghost. We have to be careful because religion has us sometime thinking we have three different Gods. You know there’s God here ..hey holy ghost- hey Jesus…its God one God one faith one baptism not three Gods not three faiths not baptism’s everytime you mess up,one. God the father, one God, three functions one and different functions God functioning as a father- God functioning as a son -God functioning as the holy ghost.” Creflo Dollar
“I believe in one God who is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I believe these three have distinct and separate functions so separate each has individual attributes, yet are one. I do not believe in three Gods.” T. D. Jakes
“God the Father. ladles and gentlemen, is a Person, and He is a triune being by Himself, separate from the Son and the Holy Ghost… God the Father 1s a Person, God the Son Is a Person. God the Holy Ghost Is a Person. But each of them is a triune being by Himself. It I can shock you- and maybe I should- there’s nine of ’em… God the Father, ladies and gentlemen. Is a Person with His own personal spirit, with His own personal soul, and His own personal spirit body. You say, 1 never read that.’ Well, you think you’re in this church to hear things that you’ve heard for the last fifty years? Ladles and gentlemen, this thing is in my book and was tested by three theologians… it’s all in the Word…” Benny Hinn
“Teachers of the Trinity teach that Jesus is Jehovah; they have no scriptures to back this up, and why don’t they believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that Jehovah is Jehovah?” Gwen Shamblin
“God the father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, God three in one. The Holy Ghost is no different than Jesus and Jesus is no different than the Holy Ghost …water you see it… if you take that to a scientists and ask it to analyze that and tell you what it is. He won’t tell you its water he’ll say that’s two parts hydrogen one part oxygen. That’s H2O now if take this and boil it and I capture the steam and I take that to the scientist he won’t say its steam he’ll say its H2O if I take this and put it in the freezer and take it to the same scientist hand it to the scientist say analyze this for me he won’t say that’s ice he’ll say that’s H2O they’re all H2O but there different manifestations of the same thing.” Rod Parsley
“You can’t call us ‘Jesus only,’ as some have. We do not deny the Father, the Son or the Holy Spirit, We believe Jesus Christ is wholly, fully, absolutely and completely God. But no one isgoing to put us in the position of saying there are three Gods.” Tommy Tenny, author, United Pentacostal Church
Do Word Faith Teachers deny the atonement on the Cross? Yes. They insist the atonement had to be paid in Hell.
“Do you think that the punishment for our sin was to die on a cross? If that were the case, the thieves could have paid your price.” Frederick K. C. Price
“Physical death would not remove our sins. He tasted death for every man – spiritual death. Jesus is the first person ever to be born again. Why did HIS spirit need to be born again? Because it was estranged from God.” Kenneth Hagin
“It wasn’t the physical death on the cross that paid the price for sin … anybody could do that.” Kenneth Copeland
“Jesus Christ knew the only way He would stop Satan is by becoming one in nature with him…He became sin, so sinners can be righteous in Him. He became one with the nature of Satan, so all those who had the nature of Satan can partake of the nature of God.” Benny Hinn http://www.alan-vincent.com
“Every prophet that walked the face of the earth under the Abrahamic covenant could have paid the price if it were a physical death only” Kenneth Copeland
It’s really time we stopped calling these men Christians. Most of them have denied the Godhood of the Lord Jesus Christ. If they don’t repent, they’re getting left behind in the Tribulation, and they’re going straight to hell at the moment of death.
The Bible commands us to separate from any who deny the Godhood of Jesus. We are to mark them and avoid them, not even wishing them Godspeed, lest we share in their punishment. How can two walk together, unless they be in agreement? Kenneth Copeland, Gloria Copeland, Benny Hinn, Kenneth Hagin, T. D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, and Myles Munroe are heretics, who teach blasphemies and damnable heresies, denying even the Lord which bought them. Unless they repent, they face a terrible future in Hell.
