1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Revelation 7:1-4 (KJV)
I’d like once again to point out: This 144,000 are Jews. Not Gentiles who are “spiritual Jews” based upon their conversion. No, there’s NOTHING in the Bible when read in the plain sense that says that. You only can assume that if you spiritualize large numbers of passages.
And of course, the Watchtower Society is the best known offenders of this. They claimed that the first 144,000 converts to Charles Russell’s cult wer the 144,000. It’s like they got to number 144,001 and said, “Oh, I’m sorry! We have to re-think our theology now!” Of that number, many left when first Russell’s date settings and later on, John Rutherford’s date settings all came to naught, and the so-called 144,000 began to realize that they had believed a pair offalse prophets, wolves in sheep’s clothing. And many left. Suddenly the Watchtower Society had to start discussing the “Earthly Hope” and the “heavenly” hope. It was no longer just the beginning people who wer the 144,000 – now it was anyone who gave signs of being a “Heavenly hope” upon therir baptism.
And let’s not forget John Rutherford’s drastic pronouncment, “Millions now living will never die!!!” Of that number, so far- millions have died.
So, NO, the Jehovah’s Witnesses are not the 144,000.
5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. 6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. 7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. 8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. Revelation 7:5-8 (KJV)
These verses here show the 144,000 must be literally – Jews. So, in jest, I say I have a far better chance of being one of the 144,000 than almost all Jehovah’s Witnesses! To see a more in depth answering of the Watchtower Society, please read my posts on that topic. Choose the topic on the lower right hand side of the page to see ALL posts on that subject. I did a lengthy analysis of that last year, and to my surprise it’s STILL one of the two most commonly read subjects on this blog (That, and Word of Faith teachings).
My word, when I first started this blog I got used to getting only the occaisional visit from the idly curios, who saw it listed after a month or so on the “Freshly pressed”. Then when someone left their first comment, I was so used to nobody reading that I was almost annoyed! “Hey! What are you doing READING my blog??? go get your own!”
Then I came to my senses, and thanked God for bringing people here to read.
Getting back on topic – you can always spot when the morning caffiene hits my brain as I write! – The 144,000 must be Jewish. Now, this also brings up one of two possible scenarios. Either God will tell the members of the 144,000 what tribe they’re from, or technology will be created that can identify the tribal designation for every Jew. So far, we only have identified a genetic marker that identifies Levites. I’m thinking it’s going to be the latter. Otherwise, we open the door to making ourselves God (“God told me to do exactly what it was I wanted!!!”), and we’ll see the same self worship masqueraded as “God told me” that led a CCM singer to tell her husband, “God told me it was okay to divorce you and remarry some other CCM singer.” No names, no hints. I don’t want all the Amy Grant fans mad at me.
What is the job of the 144,000? It’s very simple. In the 2,000 years that the Gentiles have half-heartedly evangelized the world, we saw only 1.5% of the world’s population become biblical Christians. Many got caught up in denominations that teach NOT to be born again – all you have to be is baptised as a baby, and you’re fine, or in false religions such as Mormonism or Roman Catholicism.
The 144,000 are going to complete the job in a much more effective manner. This is why we see the Great Multitude who become martyred for their faith during the Tribulation. The 144,000 will go forth, spreading the gospel in a confrontational, effective manner.
That brings me to another bugaboo I despise. There’s a methoid called “lifestyle evangelism”, which claims if you are the best Christian you could possibly be, it will get people saved.
Um, no. That’s not even close to being a Biblical or correct statement. If I’m the best Christian I can possibly be, how will that convince a co-worker that they are a sinner doomed to Hell without Jesus Christ?
It may encourage them to live better lives and be less immoral, but hey – if that’s your definition of being saved, I have GRAVE doubts that you’re saved yourself. Yes, you have to actually pass out tracts. You have to talk to people. And we’re losing ground on that.
I heard a sermon from a pastor who was Ruckmanite, and he was utterly incensed the Left Behind series had EVERYONE being marked on their head with crosses. I do agree, he’s got a point there, but he’s wrong when he says that the Bible doesn’t say anything about anyone other than the 144,000 being marked.
1 He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand. 2 And, behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side: and they went in, and stood beside the brasen altar. 3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s inkhorn by his side; 4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. Ezekiel 9:1-4 (KJV)
either this is how the 144,000 are identified, or it literally shows the special marking of all believers in the Tribulation. We forget the number of the beast is a satanic counterfiet of the marking of God’s servants.
So, what is the symbol they will be marked with? The Hebrew for the word “Mark” is Tav. Incidentally, the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The ancient Tav symbol is… a cross.
Huh. Maybe LaHeye did have it right!
Incidentally, this chapter also refutes a major key doctrine of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation 7:9-12 (KJV)
Great spot to bring a JW to. “Where is this scene?” “Heaven.” “Where is the Great Multitude?” “Uh….”
According to the Watchtower society and the “Earthly hope” doctrine, the Great Multitude is on earth. Nope, the Bible clearly shows them in heaven. That will help them to begin doubting the Watchtower Society and the governing body, and hopefully get them OUT, where they can finally read their Bible for themselves without any Watchtower literature telling them what it means. Every former Witness says the same thing, how BEAUTIFUL it is when they finally can read the Bible for themselves! It’s painful, because they see how they were lied to, brainwashed and misled by a lying cult. However, it’s beautiful because they realize all those doctrines they opposed were indeed true, and they become almost undone by the knowledge that, “8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. Revelation 7:13-17 (KJV)
