Recently, it seemed that the world of the Multiple Bible Version Proponents was rocked by the announcement that they were changing the ESV. It was hurriedly followed by the announcement that – due to the need for an unchanging, timeless Bible text – this revision of the ESV would be the only one.
The Multiple Bible version Only proponents were horrified that their beloved ESV was being revised. They were further horrified that “Scholars” were beginning to sound like – well, King James Only traditionalists.
Here’s the hypocrisy. Deep down inside, the Multiple Bible Version only proponents agree with the “Scholars”. THey do agree that the Bible needs to be unchanging, and timeless, pure for every generation. The announcement probably made them glad. “Our beloved ESV is going to be timeless!” And then, a second later, the world came crashing down as they realized – “Oh, wait… I understand the King James Only position now, and that makes me a hypocrite.”
So the protest was even louder, and the copyright owners of the ESV retracted the statement.
Over at SermonAudio, the comments were hysterical. “Okay, NOW you’ve got the perfect translation, the pure word of God! Oh, wait… NOW you have it! A new revision… hang on, we changed our minds …ok, NOW you have the pure word of God!”
And one MVO proponent spent his entire time offering recycled half truths, slams against the King James, and actually lying in his tirade against the King James. And some of you were calling him out on it, which was even funnier.
Fact – the King James Bible is NOT translated from flawed and heretical texts. James White can spin half truths and outright lies all he wants (and if this offends him, I’m not sorry – it’s the truth. You are LYING, Mr. White!), but out of the 5,300 manuscripts, uncials, miniscules, and lectionaries we have for the Syrian text, the accuracy rating is ASTOUNDING. You really don’t have to look too far to grab representative texts, and compare them. Which is what Erasmus did.
Fact – The KIng James Bible has never been REVISED. The editing work on the KIng James Bible has been to correct printing errors and to fix the spelling of words. The 1611 Edition was in the English of the day, where it was common to end words with “-e” (“Selfe”), and there was no standardized spelling for many words. Teh 1611 version did have some words spelled three different ways. The various editions were to fix that, and to “Fix” the spellings (to set in stone, in other words) of many common words. But there has never been a RE-TRANSLATION of the King James from diligent comparisons of the Greek and Hebrew texts.
Fact – MVO proponents like to say that the KJV was translated from a “few late manuscripts”. Some even say “six”. And… how many was YOUR Bible translated from? One admitted forgery (Codex Sinaiticus) and one text written by a heretic (Codex Vaticanus). So, modern Bibles are translated from two manuscripts, and the KIng James from six? Sounds like Erasmus did a far more thorough job of compiling the Textus Receptus than Nestle-Aland or Wescott-Hort!
Fact – A great deal of arguing is offered about one verse in the Textus Receptus, whether it was present in those manuscripts Erasmus looked at or not. People, have you ever heard the proverb “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” and “The Pot calling the kettle black”? If you’re trying to cast aspersions based upon a few verses at the end of Revelation and one verse in 1 John – look again. The verses are present in OTHER manuscripts, which is why Erasmus searched them out. And as for Vaticanus, it’s missing BOOKS of the Bible! Over half of Genesis is completely missing. And so they are filled in from Sinaiticus – who completely disagrees with Vaticanus when the verses are present in both editions. Dean Burgon made the witty comment “it’s far easier to find where the two manuscripts disagree than where they agree!” Over 64,000 words have been removed from some modern versions!
Fact – James White, in his book, tries to show that the Vulgate was the common use Bible of Christians for over 1100 years. Um… this is not even a half truth. To make this true, you have to do two things – 1). Pretend Roman Catholcis are Christians, and 2). Pretend all the Anabaptists, Catharists, Mennonites, Paulicians, Petrobrussians, Donatists, Waldenses, Albigenses etc. never had their Bibles.
It requires making so many incorrect assumptions, it’s like saying that China won the American Revolutionary war! You’d have to pretend that 1). Chinese are really Americans and 2). ignore the facts that the Colonials really existed, and really were commanded by Washington.
In other words, it’s a bold face lie. Very oftten, as in the case of Menno Simons, when a Roman Catholic read their Bible and realized they were in a false religion, they would leave and go to one of the existing groups that had never been part of Rome, and would obtain one of their Bibles, such as the Diodati or any of the other translations by early Baptists. And Early Baptists never used the Vulgate – we used translations from the Textus Receptus.
And no, I refuse to retract the statement that James White lied. That’s going to irritate people. Imagine how WE feel, suffering constant attacks on every side from fellow Christians, and listening to the lies repeated ad nauseum!
Here’s the bottom line – If you really want the pure, unchanging, eternal word of God – which it looks like the vast majority of Christians are opposed to – then you need the King James Bible.
