Holy Name ism.
Fasten your seatbelts, this first one is going to be a little long.
The first time I ever encountered Holy Name-ism, I was dumbfounded. “How can you not hear the absolute heresy in what you say?”
Holy Name-ism almost goes hand in hand with the Messianic Movement. Back when the Messianic Movement was using regular translations, it wasn’t so pronounced. But it set in like an infected wound with the Jewish New Testament, with its emphasis on Jewish names.
I’ll go ahead and address an issue often raised by Messianics. They claim that all the persecutions in the name of Jesus make it nearly impossible for Jews to come to Christ.
Ready to be refuted? Well, I can’t. They’re right. All the “repent and accept Christ!” demands as Jesuits tortured Jews on the rack brought shame and contempt upon the name of Christ, by men who did not believe in Christ.
It’s terrible. And we’re fighting an uphill battle.
But… changing the name to Yeshua instead of Jesus isn’t fooling anyone. They know it’s the Jewish name for Jesus. and the Orthodox Jews slur the name into Yesh’ka. So by saying “yeshua”, you’re really not fooling anyone at all.
So, if you’re not fooling anyone, why continue to use Yeshua?
“Jews won’t say the name Jesus.”
I’ll not only SAY the name Jesus, I voluntarily bend the knee to that name! Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour. So, don’t give me blanket statements of “Jews won’t say Jesus”. What name does Arnold Fruchtenbaum use? Michael Brown? Ray Comfort? We all proudly say the name Jesus Christ.
So, what’s going to bring Jews to Jesus? Well, lack of integrity won’t do it. Sneaking in the name “Rabbi Yeshua” as if you’re trying to fool Jews isn’t going to do it.
They’ll ask you right to your face, “Wait? Are you talking about Jesus?”
“Then SAY Jesus! Don’t try to trick me!!!”
So, there. That’s my suggestion. Just give them the Gospel! did the Apostles beat around the bush?
Tell me if this sounds like Peter had to trick Jews into receiving Christ…
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:14-41 (KJV)
How about this? Try listing all the Messianic prophecies! I mean, if that’s what you’re whole objection is to saying “Jesus”, then HEY!!! I can help you out by providing a whole lot of information! When I was hanging on the edge, afraid to commit, wow, that’s what pushed me over the edge!
So.. why don’t most Messianics like saying “Jesus”?
The real answer is this…
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:11-12 (KJV)
here’s the complete lack of logic, and if this condemns you, if it convicts you, we need to talk, so I can help you out, here!
“The original way to say Jesus is Yeshua. You can’t even say Jesus in Hebrew! And if there is salvation in no other name, you can’t be saved saying a name you can’t pronounce in Hebrew. Notice how similar ‘Jesus’ is to ‘Zeus’? that’s no accident! The church has deliberately lied to you!”
Is this what you heard?
Worse, is this what you believe?
Now here’s where it falls into deeper paranoia, and actual mental illness – the Messianic preoccupation with re-inventing.
“Now the real truth is, the name’s really not pronounced Yeshua, but Yahshua.”
Yeshua is the Hebrew word for salvation. If I say Jesus Christ, then I am saying literally, “Messiah is salvation” in Hebrew.
Salvation is NEVER pronounced Yah-shua. Or Yaoshua. Or Yahushua. Or Yaohushua. Or Yahoshua.
Take your pick. The fringe groups of Messianic Holy Name-ism split it up equally, depending on the preferences and lack of medication of their cult leader.
It used to be that most Messianics listened to the more experienced leaders, who actually had a little Hebrew training. The most popular name was Yeshua. Now its rapidly (at least according to the large number of Messianic websites and blogs I’ve found) Yahshua.
Haven’t any of you ever BOTHERED to learn any Hebrew? Really?
Here’s some strongly needed advice. Learn some Hebrew in a classroom setting before making dramatic, life-changing pronouncements of things you obviously know NOTHING about. And make VERY sure that you are 100% convinced that A). it is the truth and B). you do not need some kind of medication to avoid hearing voices.
Because I’m going to tell you flat out without hesitation that if you think the divine name of God is Yaohuah, and the name of the Messiah is Yaohushua… you need some kind of medication, or you’re exceptionally gullible.
Have you ever visited a Jewish synagogue? Haven’t you ever heard the Hebrew word for Salvation?
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; Luke 1:67-69 (KJV)
uh… hello!!! that’s a messianic prophecy given in the Beis Miqdash (the Temple) by a Levite – Zechar’yah, Zecharias the father of John the Baptist. He even tells those listening the NAME of the Messiah! How did he pronounce it?
How do you write that in Greek?
What’s the rule for most proper names in Greek when there’s a word with the same meaning? Add a sigma to the end. Iesous. Ἰησοῦς.
How did you write that in English. Iesus.
After midway through the 16th century, the ie combination took more the Germanic J sound (no longer used in German, ironically enough).
After a century, around 1689, they began using a new character to write that sound in English. J.
So am I 100% sure that my pronunciation of that name is accurate?
Listen, I’m not the one hearing my neighbors dog tell me to turn the hose on the mailman!
In Spanish, the Jesus name is pronounced with a “H” sound. “Heysoos.” Am I gonna tell them that’s wrong?
Nope. Go find someone with a doctorate in Spanish whom you’ve never met. ask them to pronounce Jesus in Spanish. They don’t need to lie to you, they don’t know you, and they’re not a politician! They’ll tell you “Heysoos”.
“But they’re wrong! They can’t be saved saying that?”
Where does it say that in the Bible? I’m sure Jesus Christ can speak Spanish! And English also, Mr. Arrogant! And Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, Tagalog, Zulu, and New Jersey! (Hey, I lived there once… some parts of Nooj the English there isn’t English, ya know what i’m sayin’? You feelin’ me?)
I’m saying it plainly… if you think that Jesus Christ wouldn’t answer a prayer for help and salvation from some guy because he prayed in Italian or Basque, and didn’t pronounce the Holy Name as your cult leader decreed it should be pronounced… you’re deluded, your doctrine is completely skewed into cult-ville, or you need medication.
And if you ARE hearing voices… listen, there’s nothing shameful with that! help is available! The medications are NOT poison, but all those voices you’re hearing carrying on multiple conversations can be blocked with that medication.
And I guarantee you’ll stop asking people, “What name did you say when you prayed? This is important – HOW DID YOU PRONOUNCE IT???”
Here’s where I’m really going to scare you – if you’re involved in a Holy Name cult, I 100% question your salvation.
It’s pure cultism, or its lunacy. Your choice.
