So far we’ve established:
- Jehovah’s Witnesses are not Christians, as two of the cardinal doctrines of Christianity include the Godhood of Jesus Christ and the Trinity.
- The translators of the New World Translation were not “experienced, anointed Christians” as the Watchtower Society claims – but rather untrained, inexperienced Jehovah’s Witnesses
- It would take doctorate degrees in Greek and Hebrew to be qualified to translate the Bible
- According to Ray Franz, only one of the Translators knew any Greek, and no Hebrew
- There is no good reason to withhold the list of the translators of the NWT, and suggest the Watchtower Society has something to hide by concealing the names of the translators.
- Fred Franz, who served on the translating committee of the NWT, was incapable of recognizing a single Hebrew word in court, or even a single Hebrew letter – after claiming under oath he knew both Koine Greek and Hebrew.
- The JW’s rely on the United Bible Society text and Kittel’s BHS Hebrew – for what, I don’t know, since their translators don’t know any Hebrew or Greek
- The oldest Greek texts are actually the Textus Receptus, not the Wescott-Hort The majority of the oldest forms of the manuscripts are actually Textus Receptus
- The earliest of church fathers, living in the time of the apostles until AD 130 all quoted from the Textus Receptus.
- If Vaticanus or Sinaiticus were truly the original Greek, then they wouldn’t quote words or verses that those manuscripts leave out
- The NWT has major inconsistancies compared with the Textus Receptus
- The NWT revealed its bias against the Godhood of the Lord Jesus Christ by forgetting to twist a verse that shows the Lord Jesus Christ willingly received worship, and that some worship Him in vain (Matt. 15:9)
- The usage of “Sheol” in the Old Testament in context means “The abode of the dead”
- Sheol contained both Abraham’s Bosom (Paradise) and Hell, with a great gulf fixed between
- Both the Old and New Testament say that Hell is a place of fire, perpetual torment and burning
- a Grave is cool, and does not torment or burn.
- Luke 16 is a record of fact, and not a parable
- names are never mentioned in parables, but Luke 16 names Abraham and Lazarus
- The rich man in Luke 16 is not named because obviously we don’t need to know who it is.
Last time we talked about Hell. The Watchtower Society claims that Hell is translated from the Hebrew word Sheol (they’re right) which they maintain means “The Grave” (They’re wrong).
So, today we’re going to examine every verse in the Bible using the word “Hell”. There’s a lot of verses.
I also pointed out that we derive the definition of words in the Bible by their usage. The Bible is its own dictionary – it will tell you how a word is defined, very often by examining the VERY FIRST TIME it is used – this is called (quite a theologically clever name…) The Law of First Usage. I’m not sure how theologians thought up a complicated title like that, but there you go.
Now, Bible Students (the original name of JW’s) are like Baptists in one way… if you say something like “Deuteronomy 32:22 says…” you see heads dip down immediately – they go look it up! It’s a good quality – I commend you on that. Alas, the JW must also see what the Watchtower Society, as “Christ’s chosen representative on earth, the faithful servant” says the Bible verse means.
Here’s where most of my earnest work will derail – the JW will simply not accept what the Bible says without consulting what the Watchtower Society says it means.
Think about that for a good while. I’ll be dealing with that quite soon.
Looking to the law of First Usage, what does the Bible describe Hell as?
22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. Deuteronomy 32:22 (KJV)
There. The Bble in the verse use of the word Hell dscribes Hell as “Fire burning”. And its fairly obvious from the context that the Israelites would know that Hell was burning. You notice the Lord does not need to explain what Hell is? They already knew. This is used in the manner of familarity, the “How much more” type of comment. “Hell is burning already -the Lord’s Anger will set it ablaze.”
6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; 2 Samuel 22:6 (KJV)
Now, 2 Samuel has to be be referring to those suffering in Hell – because those in Paradise would not be sorrowful. And anyone in “Soul Sleep” would not be aware, let alone sorrowful.
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? Job 11:8 (KJV)
This one is a neutral verse, merely one pointing out that Hell is within the depths of the earth.
6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering. Job 26:6 (KJV)
“Hell” and “Destruction” are used together in a descriptive, with a comparison conjunctive. In other words, its clear that “Destruction” and “Hell” are synonymous. THe words, for the geeky among us, are “Sheol” and Abbadon”.
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. Psalm 9:17 (KJV)
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Psalm 16:10 (KJV)
5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. Psalm 18:5 (KJV)
15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them. Psalm 55:15 (KJV)
13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. Psalm 86:13 (KJV)
Psalm 86 is clearly showing that salvation keeps one from eternal punishment. Think about this now – what does it matter how deep your grave is? Yet the concept of Hell combined with the reading of this verse teaches us the farther in one is placed, the worse one’s eternal punishment. All of the previous verses that we just passed without comment are clearly speaking of the wicked going into punishment.
3 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Psalm 116:3 (KJV)
We dealt with this verse above, as quoted in 2 Samuel.
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. Psalm 139:8 (KJV)
Verse 8 is again a descriptive, showing the omnipresence of God almighty.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Proverbs 5:5 (KJV)
27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. Proverbs 7:27 (KJV)
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell. Proverbs 9:18 (KJV)
11 Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men? Proverbs 15:11 (KJV)
24 The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath. Proverbs 15:24 (KJV)
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. Proverbs 23:14 (KJV)
20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. Proverbs 27:20 (KJV)
ALL of these verses speak of Hell as a place of punishment, as the abode of those who die. Every one of the following verses all clearly speak of this doctrine, of the punishment of the sinner in eternal hellfire, as well as Satan and his fallen angels.
14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it. Isaiah 5:14 (KJV)
9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. Isaiah 14:9 (KJV)
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Isaiah 14:15 (KJV)
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: Isaiah 28:15 (KJV)
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. Isaiah 28:18 (KJV)
9 And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell. Isaiah 57:9 (KJV)
16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. Ezekiel 31:16 (KJV)
17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen. Ezekiel 31:17 (KJV)
The next verses are neutral in tone, and may be referring to “Hell” as both the location of Abraham’s Bosom, and also as the place of punishment of the wicked.
21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword. Ezekiel 32:21 (KJV)
27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living. Ezekiel 32:27 (KJV)
2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down: Amos 9:2 (KJV)
Jonah is apparently quite familiar with the doctrine of the death of the sinner and his abode in perpetual torment. Witness his prayer from the belly of the whale.
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. Jonah 2:2 (KJV)
The last verse in the Old Testament is speaking of this verse in the context of the sinner destined for hell. Notice how the root of his sin is compared to Hell, the place of destruction that must enlarge itself to permit others to enter therein.
5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people: Habakkuk 2:5 (KJV)
We now turn to the words of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. whom I am desperately trying to introduce our Jehovah’s Witness friends.
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Matthew 5:22 (KJV)
This verse is clearly speaking of eternal punishment. As I’ve pointed out earlier, I’ve never seen a grave that burns with fire. Actually, being inside the earth, they would be cool. It was a common practice before the invention of refrigeration to make a “vegetable cellar”, down into the earth only a few feet that one kept their harvest in, to preserve it for a long time due to the coolness,
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:29 (KJV)
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:30 (KJV)
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28 (KJV)
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. Matthew 11:23 (KJV)
All of the preceding verses are clearly and unmistakeably speaking of Hell as a place of punishment.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18 (KJV)
This makes the first connection in the Bible between Satan and his fallen angels and their eternal destiny.
The Follwing verses are all unmistakeably speaking of a place of future punishment after death.
9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Matthew 18:9 (KJV)
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Matthew 23:15 (KJV)
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Matthew 23:33 (KJV)
43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Mark 9:43 (KJV)
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Mark 9:45 (KJV)
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Mark 9:47 (KJV)
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. Luke 10:15 (KJV)
5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Luke 12:5 (KJV)
We dealt with yesterday Lazarus.
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Luke 16:23 (KJV)
The following verse, we dealt with previously on this post, as is Peter’s commentary on this verse.
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:27 (KJV)
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. Acts 2:31 (KJV)
All of the remaining verses on Hell all speak of a place of future punishment.
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. James 3:6 (KJV)
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 2 Peter 2:4 (KJV)
18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 1:18 (KJV)
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Revelation 6:8 (KJV)
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20:13 (KJV)
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20:14 (KJV)
Bottom Line – Almost every verse in the bible speaking on Hell all speak of a place of eternal punishment of the unSaved. It is described as destruction, torment, suffering, sorrows, gnashing of teeth, wailing, weeping, burning, and fire.
None of these descriptives make any sense in connection with merely death and an oblivious soul sleep. Rather, they literally speak of future torment.
And again, I can prove it. Simply continue to deny the deity of Jesus Christ and the Trinity. A moment after death, you’ll be more than convinced of the reality of Hell, and of unending torture and torment.
Has it reached you yet that my entire purpose here is to SAVE YOU??? I’m trying very hard to make sure you are kept from this destiny!
