1.6. The Holy Bible is to be read and interpreted literally, and that the Holy Ghost gives understanding of the Scriptures to all Saved persons, without needing any person, pope or church to interpret it for them (Psa. 119:104, Psa. 25:4-5,8,9, Psa. 26:11, Jer. 31:34, Deut. 6:6-7, John 14:26, 1 John 2:27).
1.7. The Holy Bible consists of the 66 books of the Old and New Testament. There are no other books or Oral tradition to be considered Holy Writ. Neither is the Apocrypha or any of the Pseudographa to be considered Holy Scripture. The Holy Bible is complete, without missing books or gospels (Jude 1:3, Rev. 22:18-19).
1.8. The Bible is the complete and final revelation of the will of God to man (Heb. 1:1-2)
1.9. Thus, the Holy Bible is the sole authority of faith and practice in our church and in our lives (Rom. 15:4).
Moving along in our study of the Bible, I strongly recommend everyone get their Bible to check EVERYTHING I say against the Bible. I know my Statement of Faith is HUGE. But alas, in this day of apostasy, I’m forced into having extremely detailed statements. And periodically, I need to read through it with a critical eye, and determine if I’ve stated it correctly – and if it can be misused in the same wording by a heretic. For instance, the Dake Study Bible is filled with heresy, and full of spiritualizations of the text, from what I remember. Even in my days as a young “Christian” (when I thought I was saved, and attending a Word Faith church), I got the Dake Bible from the library, and began reading it. And quickly put it aside.
Dake’s first rule is to interpret the bible literally – and yet, he has a great many applications and readings in his Study Bible that are obvious violations of his own rule!
It’s like this – read the Bible. When the Bible says that the Earth was created in six literal days, believe it. What’s the spiritual application to it? The Earth was created in six literal days. Why is that important? Well, let’s put it this way – it sets a mindset that is very important. Dake falls to the Gap Theory between Genesis 1:2 and 1:3, and writes details about an imaginary Pre-Adamic race that is still referred to and taught by many Word Faith teachrers like Fred K. C. Price and Kenneth Copeland. That’s not in there. Please show me the verses that discuss the Pre-Adamic race? There aren’t any.
Okay, what about the Holy Spirit? Notice that’s the next part. The Holy Spirit gives understanding of the Scriptures to all Saved persons. The only true understanding the Holy Spririt will give an unsaved person is the knowledge they need to be saved!
Christians are nurtured and strengthened by the Bible, and the Holy Ghost making the Bible understandable.
Psalm 119:104 (KJV)
104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
Psalm 25:4-5 (KJV)
4 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
Psalm 25:8-9 (KJV)
8 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
I strongly advise all reading these words to endeavor to make these teachings listed below a part of their life. Reading your Bible, indeed, Studying your Bible is crucial. It keeps you from being misled. It keeps you growing as a Christian. It keeps you from Sin.
It is interesting to me that the Hebrew for Keep, “Shomer”, also means “Guard”. A Sabbath Keeping Jew is called “Shomer Shabbos“. He keeps and guards the Sabbath.
Thte word of God, sharper than any two edged sword, keeps and protects those that protect and keep it. On that, you can rest assured.
Psalm 26:11 (KJV)
11 But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.
Jeremiah 31:34 (KJV)
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (KJV)
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
John 14:26 (KJV)
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
1 John 2:27 (KJV)
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Part 1.7 had to be added. There’s so much specualtion by unSaved people who think they are Christians over whether we have the entire Bible or not. “And are the books of the Bible we have really books of the Bible?”
In a word, we have the entire Bible, 66 books. And yes, all 66 books are the entire Canon, which was once delivered to the saints. The Canon is finished.
Have I read the apocrypha. Yes. Note it doesn’t FEEL like the Bible. The Bible feels HOLY, Powerful. The Apocrypha feels… weird.
Have I read the Pseudographa? Yes I have. Much of it. In my younger days, I wanted so badly to believe the Book of Enoch was canonical, and just forgotten by the early Church. In later days, I was convinced that “They” had deliberately removed it.
I was wrong. Now I read it and shake my head. Thank the Lord for the helpful watchdogs who evaluate such writings and identify unScriptural elements in them. And thank God for men like Wil Kinney who spend so much of their time reading, studying and defending the Word of God against others, including many misguided but well meaning Christians.
There’s no other “Lost books of the Bible” to be found. Once a year, the History Channel or the Discovery Channel or Times Magazine usually runs an article, claiming to have found the “Historical Jesus”, or questioning the Canonicity of the Bible – usually just before Easter. It’s a subtle attack on all Christianity and the Bible.
My attitude is, you attack the Bible, you attack me.
The simple truth is, in Psalm 12:6-7 we read that God has promised to protect and preserve the Word of God. That settles any other “Not in use lost books or Gospels.” I expect them to find the “Gospel of Hymenaeus” any day now, in some musty bookstore in Cairo. And they should announce it in March. I guarantee the headlines will read, “Lost gospel found!”
Except they won’t notice that Hymenaeus was rejected by Paul as a false teacher.
20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:20 (KJV)
There are no other “lost books of the Bible” to be found. Else God would contradict Psalms 12:6-7.
The last two points are simple. There will be no more additional Revelations of God. He promised that. He settled it in His word Forever. Any false prophet that gets up and gives any additional Revelation not found in the Bible is accursed, according to Galatians 1:8-9.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9 (KJV)
We stand upon the Baptist motto (notice I didn’t say “Creed” or “Confession”) – “The Holy Bible is the sole authority of faith and practice in our church and in our lives.” If you take this attitude, you will not go wrong in your life.
Romans 15:4 (KJV)
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
