What is Ecumenism?
First and foremost… Ecumenism is the most supported idea in modern Christianity. You probably believe in it, and whole-heartedly support it, unless you’ve already been educated on it by people like David Cloud or D. A. Waite.
Ecumenism is that belief that “all Christians should put aside their doctrinal differences to work together, to evangelize the lost.”
Sounds beautiful. I could support something like that. It appeals to the feeling of justice in me.
Except the Bible forbids it.
It’s amazing to me how people can read the Bible and skip right over verses. They can stare at a verse for years and still not notice it. I am perpetually praying, “O Lord, teach me correct doctrine. Teach me to understand your word correctly.” And the Lord honors that prayer. Am I the only one the Lord honors that prayer for? Of course not. If you start praying it all the time, it’ll happen to you as well.
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. Romans 16:17 (KJV)
6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 (KJV)
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 2 Timothy 2:16 (KJV)
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 2 Timothy 2:23 (KJV)
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (KJV)
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27 (KJV)
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Ephesians 5:11 (KJV)
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. 2 John 1:10-11 (KJV)
If you’ve read any of my stuff for a while, you’ll notice I tend to simply throw the verses out there, and let them speak for themselves. This is the proper way to apologetics and defending the faith – let God’s word speak for itself.
This time I’ll take an extra minute, and explain simple English. “If there be any that come unto you and bring not this doctrine…” in other words, any person of any denomination that teaches things contrary to what the Bible plainly teaches – like infant baptism, baptismal regeneration, salvation through baptism, works plus salvation, holy name-ism, name it and claim it, predestinational salvation (in other words – you were predestined to be saved, you have no choice in the matter, you are already saved and there’s nothing you can do about it), additional grace through “sacraments” – from those people we are to TURN AWAY.
We are to shun profane and vain babblings – which is what the BIBLE calls any doctrine which is not Biblical in origin.
We are to mark those who practice these things, teach these things and AVOID THEM.
Avoid even disputing or debating these people. This is what the Bible says.
Those with unBiblical doctrines we are to TURN AWAY from.
That’s what the word of God says. There’s many more verses on them. I really recommend a study in depth on this. David Cloud’s excellent book “Biblical Separation – its doctrine and practice” is only a few dollars, and worth every penny. You’ll notice I did not quote David Cloud in this blog post – I quoted the Bible. And Mr. Cloud would no doubt wholeheartedly approve.
Should we put aside our differences for the sake of the Gospel? The Bible forbids it.
But if you all would honestly, fearfully and prayerfully consider studying your church’s or denomination’s doctrines versus the Bible – once you correct those beliefs and doctrines you have and begin to practice Biblical doctrine… then I can cooperate with you.
